"Zombies, man. They creep me out.”

—  Kaufman Land of the Dead

Believe it or not, I’m not into horror and I hate scary movies. Yes, I’m aware of the irony.

But I feel that it’s my duty to remind you that May is Zombie Awareness Month! That glorious time of year when we all get to ponder the important question of what to do when the living impaired come knocking on our doors. This annual observance, which takes place every May, is the brainchild of the Zombie Research Society. They figured that if we're going to prepare for any type of disaster, we might as well make it fun by pretending we're living in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies.

During this month, you'll find people stocking up on emergency supplies, practicing their zombie survival skills, and participating in zombie-themed events and activities. Because let's face it,, you don't want to be caught unprepared during a natural disaster, viral outbreak, or when the walking dead start wandering the streets. It's all about being ready for anything.

And I think we all agree that in a post-apocalyptic world, rum will be one of our scarcest and most valuable commodities. You’d better stock up. It’s for survival.

The Zombie cocktail was first created in the 1930s by our good friend Donn Beach. The exact recipe for the Zombie cocktail can vary depending on the bartender (I mean, even the Robb Report has a recipe for crying out loud), but we all agree it is a potent drink that contains multiple types of rum, fruit juices, and liqueurs.

You know where I’m going with this.

If you want to properly celebrate this month, get ready to mix up a Zombie with your favorite recipe (and tag me in your photo so I can see!), practice your groans and shuffles, and maybe even participate in a zombie walk or run. Just remember to stock up on brains – I mean, emergency supplies – I mean rum – and be ready to face the horde with a drink in one hand and a cricket bat in the other.

 Happy Zombie Awareness Month, everyone!
