Adelaide Merrick sold rocks to rich men and used their money to go and find better rocks. A gifted mineralogist with an extraordinary eye for crystal habit, she traveled through Peru collecting specimens for a small circle of wealthy patrons with a particular interest in things that could not easily be explained.

In August 1831, Merrick discovered an abandoned silver mine her guides refused to enter. She waited for them to reconsider, ran out of patience, and returned alone after dark.

The mine collapsed while she was inside. Her remains were recovered several days later.

Forty-seven years after her death, Merrick’s field letters became part of the collection around which the Society for Improbable Discoveries was formed. She would have found the ceremony ridiculous.
