This strange relic surfaced in Cádiz in 1923 among the effects of a sailor who claimed to have recovered it from a sea cave along the Spanish coast. He called it El Ahogado—the Drowned Man—though the skull bears no obvious signs of death by drowning.

The deep blue-black staining across the face was originally thought to be pigment, but attempts to remove it only revealed more color beneath. Coarse rope has been bound around the crown in the manner traditionally used to secure cargo aboard ship, though its purpose here is unknown.
