Lenore Voss made her living keeping secrets for the dead. For nearly twenty years, grieving families brought letters, photographs, jewelry, and other possessions of the deceased to her Prague rooms, where she sealed them inside small black cabinets and gave each family a key. Voss claimed that so long as their secrets remained locked away, the dead remained quiet.

After her death in 1889, an undertaker discovered a brass keyhole embedded in the center of her forehead. Later examination of her skull also revealed deposits of gold extending beneath the surface of the bone, deposits that have reportedly increased over time. The brass key Voss wore throughout her life fits the lock perfectly.
