Dr. Percival Rooke (from the Lost Explorers Collection)

Naturalist and explorer Dr. Percival Rooke specialized in investigating animals considered extinct, misidentified, or legendary. In 1900 he led six men into the interior of Portuguese East Africa in pursuit of an enormous nocturnal animal described in local accounts. Four months later, Rooke emerged alone, with damage to his right eye and carrying two enormous tusks. He never disclosed what happened to the other members of his expedition.

Rooke fashioned one tusk into an elaborate ceremonial gorget and wore a smoked-glass monocle until his death the following year. His body was discovered inside a locked room with a fresh puncture wound through the sternum. The second tusk was missing. His monocle has remained with the specimen ever since, reportedly because when viewed through it on a new moon, Rooke's empty right orbit does not appear empty.
