Hendrik van der Meer was hired to chart safer shipping lanes around Mauritius. Unfortunately, he had a constitutional inability to ignore anything. Sent to measure a channel, he measured the tides, the birds, the geology, and eventually something he called only the deposits: unexplained concentrations of bone in the marshes and caves of the leeward coast.

In 1871, while taking magnetic observations during an advancing storm, his instruments began behaving strangely. Rather than retreat, van der Meer climbed higher to find out why.

He was struck by lightning at the summit of a bare hill. His compass was recovered beside him, its needle fused to the housing.

Years later, his journals reached P. H. Wainwright, who read them in one sitting and immediately arranged passage to Mauritius.

The Shaman’s Lantern includes a life size skull replica, a 15ft. hemp cord with an on/off switch, and one LED flame bulb. You provide the standard Tiki brand torch base, available at any big box store.

All products are handmade and hand finished. We have done our best to photograph this item, but some discrepancies may occur.

For indoor use only. Do not leave unattended. Suitable for low wattage LED bulbs only.
